This year, Hershey Theatre marks 80 years of performing arts in Central Pennsylvania. To celebrate, it booked several Broadway musicals. Here’s the lineup:
“Ghost The Musical”: The show, based on the 1990 film starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, will run Oct. 29 to Nov. 3. It follows a young couple whose connection overcomes an untimely death.
“War Horse”: The production, which won five Tony Awards in 2011, will hit the stage Dec. 10 to 15. With the help of life-sized puppets, the musical tells the story of a boy and his beloved horse that get torn apart World War I. Steven Spielberg’s live-action movie, based on the musical, earned six Oscar nominations. Read about a local connection to the musical.
“Sister Act”: The comic crime caper, based on the 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, comes to Hershey Feb. 25 to March 2, 2014. It follows Deloris Van Cartier, a singer who witnesses a crime and is hidden by the cops in an unlikely place — a convent. She makes a splash in the choir.
“Flashdance”: The movie, starring Jennifer Beals, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The music dances into Hershey April 29 to May 4, 2014. It follows Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night. She dreams of breaking away to become a professional performer.
Returning shows: Blue Man Group, the theatrical show that combines comedy, music and technology, will perform Nov. 22 to 24. The musical “Rock of Ages” will return March 6, 2014.
